Mast head

This Vibe music magazine stands out and captures the readers attention instantly. The bold and bright font gives a huge impact on the coloring of the magazine. The effect of this, is the contrast of the front cover is intense and leaves a positive affect on the magazine. The name of the magazine, "Vibe" is used, in order to target the younger generation (teenagers). This is shown in the color of the text. Moreover, the magazine is targeted at both male and female as the color scheme is suited to both. When designing my music magazine i will use a bright and bold mast head like this in order to make it eye catching to the reader of my magazine.
Image
On this front cover, the image of Ed Sheeran is clear and is the main focus on the cover. The light background, enables the other colours on the magazine to stand out and be noticed by the reader. I like how the skin tone of Ed Sheeran creates tones and textures against the dark background. Furthermore, the image almost looks as though it is brought in front of the title, "Parade". This leaves a positive affect and makes the image look 3D like, as well as realistic. As for my music magazine, i will use an image in a similar design to this one, although it will be a different person on the cover. Using this design idea i can take my ideas even further to make it unique and unusual.
Main Headline
As for the main headline of my music magazine, it will be bold, bright and colourful to make it eye catching and will be the main text, which people should read first on the front cover. Here is a magazine cover which i will use to come up with thoughts for my main headline. On this cover, there is a contrast between the background colour and text, this is so that the text can be noticed and stand out. Additionally, the font size is larger than the rest of the font on the magazine, this indicates that the larger text is the most important text on the page and is the main article that must be read/ most raging article. As well as this, it also indicated that the audience of the magazine will like this article. Therefore, it is used as a main headline. More people will also buy this music magazine if the main headline is about a well known celebrity. So, this means, the magazine company who published the magazine will gain profit from selling a lot of magazines.
Date
A magazine cover always has a date when published on some part of the front page. This is so that people who buy the magazine know if the gossip and celebrity news is up to date. Plus, it is illegal not to include a date on a published magazine. The location of the date on the cover is usually in very small print on either the top of the magazine, the bottom or in one of the four corners. Furthermore, this magazine has the date located in the top corner above the mast head in extremely small text. This is because the date can not take a lot of room up on the page because of other conventions that need to be included on the front page. When i create my music magazine, i will ensure that i have a date in one of the corners of my font cover and will use this magazine cover to help me decide the spot i will use to place the date.
Barcode
http://barcode.tec-it.com/en
All magazines use a barcode .This is so that the magazine can be scanned through a counter when being bought by someone. Here is a link that will help me design a free barcode for my music magazine. Using this website i can create a whole new barcode that is not used for anything else. Therefore, my magazine is unique to any other product. The position of my barcode will be placed in the bottom left corner of the page.
Issue number

The issue number is the number of magazines that have been published and have been successful from the same company in a space of time such as a year. For example 'Vogue' in a space of time. The issue number is also noticed next to the date in most magazines nowadays. Although, some magazines do not have an issue number stated. Therefore, only the published date is shown. In this magazine, the issue number is shown in very small font at the top of the page next to the published date. this magazine has a stated issue number of 1168. When i come to design my music magazine i will use an issue number which will be situated in a similar place to this one and it will be shown next to the published date in the top right corner of the page. Also, i will use a small font on word to create this.
Price of the magazine

Furthermore, the price of a music magazine is usually estimated between 2 to 5 pounds and the cost is never rounded to the nearest pound. The cost tends to be a pound number and a 99p or 50p afterwards. So i will give a suited price of 3 pound and 99 pence. The price will be located below the barcode so that it is noticeable to see by the readers who are going to buy it. additionally, i will create my price in a small, black font using Microsoft word. This is so that it does not take up much space on the front cover for everything else i am planning to use, included in this post on my front page. Here, this magazine shows the price in the left corner below the barcode. It is in a very small font so it is not shown as the main focus of the front page.
Tag line

A tag line is a feature or name of something that is given on the front page which is not a part of the magazine company but has been included either by a request or has been added by permission to include as an extra feature on the magazine. I will use a tag line on my front page because it gives the reader an idea of what features are mentioned and what they are about inside the music magazine. My feature will be shown in a decent sized font and a bold color so that it stands out against the color of the background of my front cover. In this case, on this cover, the main tag line is "Global warming's terrifying new math". This is the tag line because the topic is irrelevant to the theme of the magazine and to any other article highlight shown on the front page. my tag line will be bold, and in a white font as i am planning to create a dark background. Also, the tag line will be interesting as well as the topic the tag line is about. This will persuade people to buy the magazine as they may be interested in the tag line shown on the front cover.
Banner

By including a banner on my front page, this will create a positive affect, as it will be in a large font, bold, and bright. This will stand out amongst the other information included on my front page. Moreover, the banner will include featured artists/ celebrities i am planning to include in my magazine and on my contents page. Here is an example of a design of banner, which i will use to come up with a banner idea. Plus, it will help me with the structure of my banner and the text on my banner.
Splash/Puff

My music magazine will include a puff which is basically an extra bit of information which usually looks like a sticker put it is part of the magazine cover. The magazine here shows a puff of a "back to school fashion sneak peak". This is shown in a bright yellow in order for it to stand out and be noticed. This links to the idea of what the articles are about inside the magazine. In this case, it would be fashion. i will take this idea into the creation of my music magazine and use a similar idea. However, my splash/ puff will refer to a music theme rather than a fashion theme.
Contents
Navigate

The navigation of my music magazine will be set out in a good structure so that it is manageable for the target audience of the magazine to easily find articles they are looking for. As well as this, my contents page information needs to be spread out with large text and spaces to separate articles and themes from irrelevant articles and themes. In this music magazine, information is laid out well and is shown clearly in sections. using this contents page, i will use this idea to design and think about space and navigations for my music magazine.
Page numbers
page numbers must be included on the contents page, so the targeted audience know what page to look for when wanting to read a certain article or feature. When i come to design my magazine, i plan to use a band index, which will list every artist/ band that is included and has something written about them on a page inside the magazine. By using a band index, i will be able to keep the list separate to other information. Therefore, it will have its own section, away from other features. Below, is an example of a band index which includes page numbers and will be helpful for the design of my band index.
Captions

I will include a caption on my contents page to make the reader interested in reading a certain article. A caption tends to be larger than other text on a page. however, it is not as large as a masthead or main headline. i will create the caption using word art and make it eye catching towards the reader. As well as this, i intend to make the font style different to other fonts on the contents page. The outcome of this, is that it will enable the text to stand out on the page. In addition to this, i will try to include alliteration in my caption to make it catchy and sound good. This will also interest the reader/target audience.
Articles are essential when it comes to magazines. Small lines of text of the articles are mentioned on the front cover and they are talked about on the double page spread. As well as the contents page. The band index shown on the contents page lists artists/bands that are included in the magazine. So, these will give an idea of what articles are about inside the magazine. Moreover, hints given on the front cover are stated in the text on the front page. My music magazine will consist of these features. Furthermore, i will make sure my article hints are interesting and reach the younger generation/ my targeted audience's expectations of my music magazine.
In order to achieve this, celebrity gossip, news and features will have to be suitable and likeable towards the targeted audience. So, i will look at popular chart artists/ bands and well known celebrities, for the younger generation and age range chosen to target. Achieving this, my magazine can become successful. This example, shows a contents page of featured articles, bands/artists, more included features and news that are discussed in the magazine. Using this i can come up with a layout and ideas of how i will set out features of the magazine on my contents page.
Images

Images on the contents page are usually a medium to large size, as featured articles and themes are shown on the contents page. The images are usually colourful and stand out against the background colour of the page. Plus, there is usually only 1 or 2 images and the rest is information of features, artists and an index. The images used on the contents page tend to be related to a key topic or theme of the magazine. For example, Adele is used on this contents page. Therefore, Adele is most likely a key artist and has key information not to be missed written about her. As for my music magazine, my intentions are to use 2 images that have key stories related to them and are likeable for my target audience. One of my images will be of a band and the other will be of a music artist that are well known and are popular. As for the size, they will both be medium sized. So there is still a lot of space available for other features and text on the page. Here is an idea of what my magazine cover should be similar to and i will use for clues for the design.

So there is still a lot of space available for other features and text on the page. Here is an idea of what my magazine cover should be similar to and i will use for clues for the design.
Text

The text on a double page spread is usually a range of small and large, bold and original fonts, as the text represents different topics and themes. Most likely, a double page spread will talk about a particular topic or person and therefore, the text written is related to that person. Alternatively, the font may also stay the same on a double page spread and only the size will change if the spread only relates to one particular person. In my double page spread, i will use different fonts of different sizes in my text which will enable the reader to understand related information. Additionally, a double page spread usually includes one image of the person/ celebrity, which has text written about them and so the image will be large and noticeable, in order for the targeted audience to recognise this. My music magazine will include large and bold text with a large image, in order to capture the readers attention and to make it clear of who the text is written about. Also, my music magazine will include some colour in bold text in order for it to stand out. I like this double page spread because the large image includes colour which matches the colour theme of the text on the page next to it. This creates a colourful affect.
Image
The image used on my music magazine will be interesting and have bold colour to it. This is because it will be a large image, therefore it takes up a lot of space of the spread. Plus, the colour used will link to the colour used in the text to show the reader that the image is connected to the article. I intend to use an image with tones and textures in it. This makes the magazine look more professional and successful. The image below is bright, colourful and shows many tones and textures. This image will help me with developing my image and giving me ideas and thoughts of making it a success.
As for the title, a large and intense text is used as well as exposure to make it stand out. The title is always catchy and grabs attention. Therefore, in my double page spread i will ensure that my title is acceptable and links to the article on the spread. In addition to this, i plan to use more than one colour in my title and make sure the colour used is the same or similar to colour used in my large image and other colours on the double page spread. This is to connect my image and title together as they are relevant to each other. This image shows a title of the design i plan to use to create my own title on my double page spread.
Drop Cap
A drop cap is popular on many magazines. Although, they are not used on every magazine. My intentions are to use a few drop caps on my double page spread, at the beginning of the article and at the start of a paragraph. This will be classed as an extra feature on my magazine spread and will stand out against the small font, as it will be in a large font and a bold colour that is different to the other font in the article. Again, the colours used will have a relation to the colour used on the other parts of the spread, such as the image and title. Here, the example of the double page spread shows a drop cap being used.
Pull quote
A pull quote is used to attract the targeted audience's attention and persuade them into reading an article or piece of information. Therefore, the pull quote needs to be exciting and interesting in order to attract attention. When designing my double page spread i will think about the language and word type i use. By using Alliteration in my pull quote, it will make it sound interesting and catchy. Also, i can make the font a medium size so that it looks bigger than the article font size, smaller than the main title and does not take up a lot of space on the double page spread. However, as for the colour of the pull quote, i will keep it the same as the colour of the text in the article. This is to show the reader, that both the article and pull quote are connected. In addition, i aim to keep the pull quote short and snappy, so that it does not give too much information away about the article. It only interests the reader. I have picked this example to the left that includes a pull quote because i like how it gives small hints away about the article but nothing in depth.
Caption

The caption is similar to the pull quote. Although, a caption tends to be placed just below the title. As well as being a slightly smaller size to the title. This basically explains what the title means in a few more words. The caption also refers to the article on the page and is a persuasion to the reader. Therefore, a pull quote and caption are very similar and some magazines only use one or the other. My magazine will include both just to make it a little more exciting and to pull more of my target audience into reading the article. I will use an ellipsis in my caption to show that there is more text to come below that is explained in the caption. The caption will stay black in a bold font and i plan to create this using Microsoft word. This is so that colour on my double page spread is not over the top as i already intend to include a lot of colour. Including more colour would just make the page look too bright and start to create a negative affect on my magazine and also towards the reader/ target audience. Here is an example of a caption which is positioned in the place i will create my caption.
Anchor
An anchor tag is used to tag a link or website onto a magazine page. As for my music magazine, i will add an anchor tag on my double page spread and make up a website name, that relates to my double page spread article. This allows the reader to access more information on the article read, by visiting this website on their phone or laptop. The website address/URL i use will have the magazine main title in it, as the article is included in my magazine. Furthermore, this is gives a positive impact on my magazine, as more age-targeted audiences, will recognise my magazine company's website. Especially those who do not read music magazines. So, my magazine has a chance of becoming more noticeable and popular also by the public. The place of the anchor tag on the double page spread, will be at the bottom right corner of the page below the article. Therefore, the audience can notice it easily, after reading the article. In this double page spread below, the URL/ website anchor is shown in a highlighted red, in very small font in the bottom right corner of the page. Taking this idea, i will highlight my website anchor in a colour that will stand out to capture attention and keep my text to a small size, in a normal black font.
The features above, will all be included in my music magazine, in order to achieve the highest professional standard i can. These conventions and denotations, will be able help me design my magazine and represent research for my magazine. The example images used throughout this post, of official magazines, will give me an idea of how i plan to create the layout of my magazine. Therefore, i can reach the expectations of a high standard music magazine.
